1/17 Instance: Newborn Animosity

Post by Slarti »

Timelined Jan. 17

<Jessica> Jess sat curled up in the rocking chair, watching Miriam sleep in her crib. She looked so tiny in it... but she didn't want to take her out and risk waking her so she watched from a safe distance in what was a much more comfortable position now that there wasn't a tiny person booting her insides.

<Shaw> A shower was almost a luxury after the last few days, and Sebastian had taken advantage. Now, freshly shaved and in clean clothes, he quietly went into the nursery and looked down into the crib with a fond smile, one he turned on Jessica within a few moments. So very quiet. For now.

<Jessica> Jess smiled back, uncurling and stretching a little, She's fast asleep and so far no crazy twinges on the emotional spectrum so I think I'll run across and shower too... She pushed a hand through her hair, getting to her feet and going to kiss him on her way to the door.

<Shaw> Sebastian caught her and pulled her to him for a moment. It felt like old times now, without the bump, and he gave her a gentle squeeze and a nuzzle. Enjoy.

<Jessica> She smiled, returning the gesture, before she slipped away and headed across the hall to their room. What she really wanted was a nice hot bath but she didn't have time for one of those.

<Shaw> He looked in on Miriam one more time and then moved to the dresser and the array of tiny clothing and diapers. It was shocking how much she went through.

<Monet> Monet raised her hand to knock, but thought better of it at the last moment. Sebastian? Are you home?

<Shaw> The sudden voice in his head startled him, and he realized he'd left his phone in the bedroom, so the security system alert was rather useless. Yes, we are. Just a moment. He looked in on the sleeping baby again and then detoured by their bedroom to get his phone. The water was already running in the bathroom.

<Monet> Monet shifted the package to her other arm and waited for Sebastian to let her in. Is everything alright?

<Shaw> Yes, of course. The baby is asleep and Jess is showering. Hope and Shinobi were... out. Sebastian opened the front door and grinned. "Monet!"

<Monet> Monet smiled broadly and leaned up to kiss both cheeks, "Papa Shaw."

<Shaw> He laughed, surprised, and gave her a tight hug. "Oui."

<Monet> She returned the hug, "I cannot wait to meet her. But I don't want to wake her unless it's close to the end of her nap." Monet handed the parcel over to Sebastian. "I thought it would be appropriate for her first gift from me to be a designer baby gown."

<Shaw> "Merci, Monet," he said with a grin and took the package. "I'm not sure... she's not really on a schedule. I believe they're supposed to have those..." Sebastian ushered her inside.

<Monet> Monet smirked and stepped inside, bending over to pat the dog on the head before tossing the awaited treat from her purse across the room. "Not yet. They don't tend to have a schedule until they get a little older than a few days. Right now, she's just trying to adjust to not being in an all inclusive walking resort."

<Shaw> Sharky sniffed and left the biscuit, more interested in the woman's shoes. "I'm not sure that Jess would appreciate that comparison, but I understand what you're saying," he said with a chuckle and took Monet's coat. "Shall we go upstairs?"

<Monet> "Mais oui." She started walking before the dog could start licking her shoes. Again. Monet followed Sebastian up the stairs and into the nursery. She walked straight to the crib and smiled softly. "Sebastian, she's beautiful."

<Shaw> "Yes, she is. Thank you." Sebastian watched Miriam sleep, even the little twitches of her hands and feet still amazing him.

<Jessica> Shower completed and cleanness achieved, Jess shut off the water and wrapped herself in some nice fluffy towels, taking her time to dry off and pamper her skin a little.

<Monet> "Was she in perfect health when she was delivered? No complications, I assume?" She reached down and ran the back of her finger over her tiny soft cheek.

<Shaw> "She's perfect and so was Jess. Everything went well." Sebastian could hear Jess in the bathroom.

<Monet> Monet looked over her shoulder at Sebastian, "Bien. Do you need anything from anywhere? Is Jessica getting enough sleep? You are helping her at night, oui?"

<Shaw> "As much as I'm able, yes." He noticed Miriam twitch again and flail one arm. "Changing my first diaper was... an experience."

<Jessica> Jess left the bathroom in a robe, scrunching the ends of her hair in the towel to try and get the last of the drips to stop dripping and pausing to half listen to the conversation.

<Monet> Monet laughed softly, "Oh, oui. I remember helping change my siblings diapers. They were not fun for me to do, but Mother insisted I help." She looked up at Sebastian with questioning eyes, "May I hold her? Or would you prefer I leave her until she wakes on her own?"

<Shaw> "She seems to be waking, so either she will or won't..." Sebastian reached into the crib and picked up his daughter, already getting more and more accustomed to how small and fragile she was. Miriam snuffled and he brought her to his chest for a moment to rub her back and calm her, giving Monet a small smile.

<Jessica> Jess recognised the other voice as Monet's and wondered what she was doing there. She pushed a hand through her hair and went to take some clothes out of the closet.

<Monet> "I forgot how small newborns can be." She smiled at the vision of the strong and large Sebastian Shaw, Black King of the Hellfire Club, holding something that tiny with such tender care. "I can see she already has you wrapped around her tiny finger."

<Shaw> "Of course she does." He carefully moved over to Monet to pass her the baby.

<Monet> Monet easily took her from him and instantly missed her sisters. "Who's baby photos does she favor more?" She slowly swayed from side to side, keeping Miriam close to her chest, "I won't tell anyone you've softened if you won't tell anyone I have."

<Shaw> "Well, Jess has none, but she doesn't really look like me... other than the obvious." He reached over and touched the baby's dark hair. "We'll take our secrets to our graves," he agreed with a chuckle.

<Jessica> After locating some loose clothing, Jess tied her hair back into an approximation of a ponytail and headed barefoot across the hall to the nursery. "Hey..."

<Shaw> "Hello, love." Sebastian turned to greet Jess and joined her, giving her a quick kiss. "Monet brought Miriam a gift."

<Monet> Monet turned to face Jessica as she walked in, "Bonjour, maman. She's beautiful. How are you feeling?"

<Jessica> Jess slid her arms around him, resting against him as her eyes wandered over Monet and settled on her sleepy daughter, "I'm fine..."

<Shaw> Sebastian circled an arm around her and a reassuring nudge through their link. "She's tired, of course."

<Monet> "Well, oui. She just brought a living being into the world. That is no small feat." Monet shifted the way she was holding Miriam and ran her hand over her soft head of hair. "She has so much hair."

<Jessica> Jess was trying not to project her anxiety but being new at the empathy thing she wasn't sure if she was being entirely successful. She knew logically that Miriam was perfectly safe with Monet but she didn't know the woman all that well and most of her experiences of her had not been good.

<Shaw> "Yes," he laughed, giving Jess a squeeze. "That would probably be my fault, but I'm certain Jessie contributed." He turned his head to nuzzle her thick hair.

<Jessica> "Not to the colour though," she smiled, returning the gesture.

<Monet> "I already asked Sebastian, Jessica, but I would like to hear your answer: is there anything you need? Do you need extra help so you can rest?"

<Jessica> Jess shook her head, "I have all the help I need, really."

<Shaw> "Although Hope seems to have gone into hiding, and taken Shinobi with her." He decided it was time for a change of subject.

<Monet> "I was going to suggest Anna, actually. I know you don't care for me."

<Jessica> Jess blinked, a little surprised, but still shook her head, "Really, we're fine..."

<Monet> "Bien." Monet turned her attention back to the small bundle in her arms, "She really is quite amazing already." Sebastian, have you double checked all of your security measures? Just in case?

<Shaw> Absolutely I have. And as much as I am loathe to admit it, Viper's security is an extra assurance as well. "She is, isn't she?"

<Monet> Tres bien. You can never be too careful. Her smile got bigger as the little one stirred in her arms, "Sweetest Princess in all of the United States."

<Jessica> "I think Hope would disagree..." Jess held out her arms so she could take Miriam. She wasn't sure how much longer she could keep a lid on the anxiety.

<Shaw> He understood her upset, and tried not to let it affect him. "I'm sure Hope would."

<Monet> Monet's smile faded just a touch as Jessica moved to take Miriam from her, but Monet handed her over without a word. "I'm sure they're both fine. They're fully capable of taking care of themselves."

<Jessica> "Of course they are..." Was that ever in any doubt? Jess bristled a little but softened when she had Miriam cradled against her again.

<Shaw> Sebastian felt Jessica's upset and looked down, directing his thoughts to Monet. I'm sorry, she's still... sensitive.

<Monet> Monet arched an eyebrow at Jessica, but turned her gaze to Sebastian. <About what? The fact that I protected her and her child from harm?>

<Shaw> Likely, but she's just given birth to my child, and so I can't fault any of the reasoning behind her anxieties. He moved back to Jess and slid his arm around them.

<Jessica> Jess smiled at him, turning to put Miriam between them a little, protectively.

<Monet> Fine. She smiled sweetly at the baby, then looked at her parents. "I just wanted to stop by with Miriam's present and offer my congratulations. I waited a few days to make sure you were all comfortable. But, judging by the body language of the new mother, I'm not wanted. So, in order to keep her peaceful, which will keep your daughter peaceful, I'll go."

<Jessica> "Your congratulations and your gift are appreciated but I don't need or want your help." Monet's brand of 'help' left much to be desired.

<Shaw> Sebastian gave his wife a warning look, and went to Monet to offer his arm. "I'll see you out, Monet, before this gets ugly."

<Jessica> Jess sighed, skirting around them to settle into the rocking chair again. I'm sorry, I just haven't entirely forgiven her for how she chose to handle everything last year. She did feel a bit bad for putting Sebastian in the middle.

<Monet> Monet's eyes narrowed, but she kept her tongue in check. There was no need to say anything untoward in front of the child about the child's mother. Even if she couldn't understand what was being said yet. "Oui."

<Shaw> I know. He kept a lid on his own feelings, and smiled blandly at Monet, escorting her downstairs and retrieving her coat.

<Monet> "Merci, Sebastian. I'm sorry this wasn't a more pleasant visit." She kissed him lightly on the cheek and accepted her coat from him.

<Shaw> "Just give it some time, mon ami." Sebastian impulsively gave her a hug after helping her into the coat.

<Monet> Monet returned the hug and gave him an extra squeeze. "You're going to be an amazing father. Miriam is lucky to have you."

<Shaw> "Merci." He closed his eyes for a moment before he let her go to open the door.

<Monet> "Au bien tot, amant. If you do end up needing anything, do not hesitate. I will make sure it's done."

<Monet> She gave him a brief smile before slipping out the door with a wave.
