[Meggan] Meggan sat out by the lake, now her favourite spot, on a blanket. She was practising her shapeshifting, thinking of things then checking her reflection in the water to see if she'd morphed them or not. Nine times out of ten she had and it was getting frustrating.
[Meggan] "Stupid shape-shifting...." she muttered, munching on a cookie, "Maybe I should give up..."
[Tom] Tom walked through the woods, strolling from tree to tree. He still couldn't believe what he did to Lizzie the previous day. No sense thinking about it now, it's history. What peaked his interest now was in the general direction he was walking.
[Tom] He finally could see the lake though the trees, and someone was there, who seems to change shapes. She lifted her head and looked at him coming near.
[Meggan] Her empathy told her it wasn't a tree... but it looked like a tree. "Who are you?" She stood up, something felt familiar but....
[Tom] It was Meggan. As Tom came closer he said, "I give ya three guesses. "
[Meggan] Meggan's eyes widened, "Tom? Good gods! What happened to you?" she was wondering why she hadn't seen him around the school lately but this... it was a bit of a shock.
[Meggan] "Are... are you stuck like that?"
[Tom] "Aye, Dr. McCoy said this was natural, part of my mutation. Apparently this is how I'm supposed to look." he said the last sentence with much distaste. "And you, what are you doing here, away from the rest."
[Meggan] "Practising," Meggan said, simply, she put her shields back up, Tom was... well... cross and she didn't want that effecting her. "My shapeshifting's a bit broken and it's easier to avoid distraction out here - the trees don't think I'd look better with bigger boobs..."
[Tom] Tom though hard of her with bigger boobs.
[Meggan] Meggan scowled at him, "That is not funny, mister!" she folded her arms and willed herself to keep her shape.
[Meggan] "Keep that up and I'll turn into a beaver..." she smiled to make sue he knew she didn't mean it, "What's it like being... well... a tree? I haven't tried yet..."
[Tom] "Don't, it's not worth the energy or time. And I'm not a tree, most of my body just happens to be made out of wood." He stood there, standing and watching the water of the lake. "So how often does your, er, shapeshifting fail?"
[Meggan] "Lately... all the damn time," she sighed, "Stupid shape-shifting. Stupid Empathy. All they do is cause me trouble. I guess you're having your power right now too?" she tried do not show pity but she wasn't good at hiding her emotions...
[Tom] "Hate doesn't come close, when it first appeared I hated it, now I despise it." he went silent for a wihle, "And you? Ever like the way you are?"
[Meggan] "I hated it every day til I met my foster parents. But they accepted me for what I was so I thought it was ok... and now all this is going on and I'm abck to hating it." She frowned and sat down, watching the water,
[Meggan] "It just seems like, no matter how much I think I understand what I am... there's always something waiting to screw it up." She sighed and tossed a pine cone into the water, watching it float around.
[Meggan] "Maybe yours is a natural part of your mutation through.... can you do more stuff now?"
[Tom] "A couple of stuff, I have been experimenting out here since this happened." Tom kneeled to the ground and hovered his hand over it for a while, then a plant started growing. He stood up as a fern grew next to where he was standing.
[Tom] "I can make them die too. I take it you wouldn't like me to show you that."
[Meggan] Meggan watched the plant, then shook her head at his next question, "NO... I don't like it when things die... I can feel it..."
[Meggan] "But that's pretty good, I wish I could do that... wouldl be helpful for all the squirrels in here - they forget where they bury stuff..." she smiled, "I spend most of my free time helping them find it."
[Tom] Tom looked at her with a smile, "You help squirrels find their nuts?"
[Meggan] Meggan giggled, "Yep. Forgetful little things, they are," she smiled back, "But they're ever so greatful, it's really quite cute.I wish all the animals in here were as nice. Some of the birds really are very rude..." she frowned,
[Tom] "Heh, and all this time all I thought they were just thinking eat, sleep and shite, excuse my Irish."
[Tom] "Can you just feel their emotions or do you actuallly speak to them."
[Meggan] "It's hard to say... Animals and humans work differently. Animals don't so much talk in the same was as people... it's all instinct, all feeling. I think it's partly empathy and partly the shapeshifting... it's really hard to explain..."
[Meggan] "I've been able to do this all my life so it's weird trying to figure out how it all works... it just comes naturally."
[Tom] "You mentioned you don't like it when things die, can you hear the trees as well?"
[Meggan] Meggan nodded, "Yep, and they hate winter," she smiled, "all I get lately, is that it's cold and the ground is hard and there's no rain getting to their roots..."
[Meggan] "I wish I could do something for them but I can't melt ice so..."
[Tom] Tom chuckled, "Seems like we have something in common there. I can hear the trees too, quite a shock at first, but now it's getting rather irritating. Can't seem to drown out the chaos, from time to time."
[Tom] "How do ya cope with all the.." Tom waved his hand in the general direction to the trees around them, "..all the noise
[Meggan] "Used to it I guess..." Meggan said, thoughtfully. She pulled her cookie tin over to her and took one out, offering one to Tom, "Cookie?"
[Meggan] "Always been able to hear the trees... it's wierd doing the shielding thing and having it go away... feels like I'm all alone.... Maybe you could get shielding lessons?"
[Tom] Tom took a cookie, "Shielding lessons? From who?" He took a bite out of the cookie, and it was surprisingly tasty. "What are these?"
[Meggan] "Vanilla, Chocolate and Whiskey." Meggan grinned, "Family recipe... Maybe Proffessor Xavier - I've been asking Lizzie but I heard you two fell out or something so...." she paused, "Or I dunno... there's a few of us that can help probably..."
[Meggan] She thought for a moment, "Personally I don't like shielding and I can't understand why anyone would want to so I'm not very good at it but I suppose I could help you if you wanted..."
[Tom] Tom thought of Lizzie again, you could practically have smelt the fear. "I wouldn't mind a quick tip about it right now, if you don't mind."
[Meggan] Meggan blinked, "Um... ok..." She paused in thought again, "Er... right..." what did Lizzie say again...? "Imagine you're surrounded by a bubble. Like a force field and nothing can get in unless you wnat it to."
[Meggan] "Then will that forcefield into existtance and use it to block out all the feelings from the trees. It may take some time, I'm not gonna lie to you. It might help if you close your eyes too - less distractions," she folded her arms over her chest out of paranoia.
[Tom] Tom put the rest of the cookie in his mouth and rubbed the crumbs off his hands. "Let's give it a try then," He closed his eyes thinking of a bubble around him as she told him to. He imagined the bubble stoppping everything around him, pushing back anything wanting to get in.
[Tom] H e thought harder of the bubble muffling out sound, but the harder he thought oabout it, the more he kept thinking of himself standing there with his eyes closed next to a beautifull girl. This man that looked like a wooden statue, standing with his eyes closed trying to stop the noise.
[Tom] All the noise from the trees and plants that he started hearing since he turned into this fuckin' wooden monstrosity.
[Meggan] Meggan squeaked suddenly, "Oh crap! Stupid empathy!!" she groaned, "I hate it! I hate it!!"
[Tom] Tom opened his eyes after hearing Meggan shouted, and she looked....."You're wood." Tom said with a bit of surprisement.
[Meggan] Meggan sighed, stopping in her pacong, "Yes, it appears my empathy thought it'd be nice and let me know how you feel."
[Meggan] This was really starting to get irritating. "Bloody empathy. BLoody Shapeshifting." She kicked a pinecone at a tree, the tree grumbled at her for a moment then a few leaves dropped off as it did the tree equivalent of laughing.
[Tom] Tom watched her with an open mouth, he has seen himself in the mirror, but has never seen that barklike skin on a face not his own. He stepped closer to her, lifting his hand, "Do you mind if I felt you skin, or bark?"
[Meggan] Meggan raised a wooden eyebrow, "Uh.... ok..." this was all a bit surreal. She imagined Tom wasn't used to this either so she better humour him a bit.
[Tom] Tom looked at one side of her face, slightly touching her cheek, then leaned over to the other side of her face, stroking her skin so as if scared he'll break her. "I hought I was a monster like this...but seeing you the same. You look like a sculpture."
[Tom] His stroking went from cheek to ear, from ear to jaw, from jaw to neck, from neck to... he pulled back, "I'm sorry, I went too far."
[Tom] "I shouldn't have asked to touch you in the first place."
[Meggan] Meggan didn't know what ti say now, "Uh... it's ok..." was it? she was sure she'd be blushing if she wasn't made of wood. "And you're not a monster. You're just different."
[Meggan] "Everyone here is different, in their own ways. Unique and special and not a monster at all. I can turn into anything I want to, people would call me a monster - my parents did. But I know I'm loved so what does it matter?"
[Meggan] She shifted back to her normal form and gave Tom a hug, it was a bit strange hugging him like that, after all it was like hugging a tree. But a hug was a hug. "It'll be alright, I'm sure."
[Tom] Tom felt a bit unsure when she hugged him at first, but he quickly felt better than returned the hug, making sure not to squeeze too hard, he didn't want to give her a splinter.
[Meggan] "Maybe, when you get used to this, there'll be a way for you to change back?" Meggan said hopefully, standing back and looking him in the eyes, they were so blue, it was hypnotic, "And even if there isn't a way, it's not so bad. Personally, I like trees - far less complicated than people."
[Meggan] She grinned, "And if you get bored or feel alone, come and find me, if I'm not in a lesson I'll be right out here practising. And I can help you learn to shield and you can keep me company while I practise my shapeshifting."
[Tom] Tom smiled back, "I'd love to," his smile turned into a grin.
[Meggan] "Good!" Meggan chirped, shenshe frowned at the sky, the air temperature had dropped quite a lot and it was clouding over, "Oh damn... I think it's going to reain again.... Are you going to be alright out here?... I know a sheltered area you can stay in to avoid the worst of the weather,"
[Meggan] She'd lived there for a while, she thought, "I'll need to go back up to the mansion, I'm not allowed to get sick incase that messes up my powers even more..."
[Tom] "Nah, I'll be fine, thinking of going back in myself. After you."
[Meggan] Meggan smiled, she gathered up her blanket and her box of cookies and headed back up to the mansion. Tom following behind her, she felt a bit better now. She was finally using her empathy how she wanted to - to help other people.

"If you live your life to please everyone else, you will continue to feel frustrated and powerless. This is because what others want may not be good for you. You are not being mean when you say NO to unreasonable demands or when you express your ideas, feelings, and opinions, even if they differ from those of others.â€

So, is being a tree possibly going to make Tom LESS of a bastard? That’d be a twist.

Oh SOOO many double meanings in that one.
Awesome stuff though. Tom was actually human! Imagine! It was really touching actually. It makes me almost guilty to think about the whole Warren burning him, but man. He was so creeeepy with Lizzie.
