Nationality: Brazilian

Abilities: Solar absorption and rechanneling, superhuman strength, concussive blasts, projection of heat and light, and flight.

Non-mutant related abilities: Speaks several languages fluently, i.e. English, Portuguese, Latin and Spanish. Quite intelligent due to his training, since a young age, to take over his father’s business empire. Has various other minor abilities, including piloting skills and leadership capabilities.

Parents: Emmanuel da Costa and Nina da Costa

History:
Sunspot is Roberto da Costa, a Brazilian male, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro. He is the son of wealthy businessman Emmanuel da Costa and archaeologist Nina da Costa Despite becoming one of the most influential people in the Brazilian economic and political scene, Emmanuel always had time for Roberto; However, Emmanuel always relentlessly drove Roberto to be well-educated, decisive, strong and ruthless; Emmanuel had every intention of making Roberto into a worthy heir for his business empire.

Roberto went to school in Rio's Vilár School. During his early teenage years, he became the star soccer player in his school's team, the Thunderbolts. Olympic recruiters took notice of him at that age, and began grooming him for eventual inclusion in Brazil's national soccer team for the Olympic Games.
Shortly before his sixteenth birthday, Roberto was in a soccer game between the Thunderbolts and their arch-rivals, the Dynamos. Racist members of the Dynamos assaulted Roberto during the game without the referee's notice, and Roberto took matters into his own hands, initiating a fight on the field. It was at this time that he would for the first time manifest his mutant powers. Transforming suddenly into a creature of solid black solar energy, he was as surprised and terrified as everyone else.

Not long after that incident, the da Costas moved to America, mainly to avoid the death-threats Roberto had been receiving. They eventually settled down in their Beverly Hills home, and things calmed down, with Roberto going to a prestigious academy. Several years later, Roberto’s father successfully made a bid to become a Senator.

At the age of 17, Roberto began experimenting with his powers, using his father’s new position to secure himself safe havens to do so, but concurrently, his attitude also took a turn for the negative. He became more vicious, feeding off the ruthlessness his father had cultivated in him, including his new-found control over his powers. Many rumours arose around him at school, but always without sufficient evidence to pin any one thing to his name.

In his mid 19’s, the well-documented events of his court case took place, and his subsequent entry into Xavier University.

Roberto da Costa AKA Sunspot

Little story from his past.

EXT NIGHT: Beverly Hills Residence

A man, clad all in black, can be seen running out the back door of a house. Quickly, he scrabbles over a fairly tall fence, falling over onto the other side and backing away from it, horror clearly etched onto his face.

Slowly, the wooden fence began to bend inwards, towards the man’s side, as he watched in mute terror. Ominous cracks began to emit from the wood, seconds before it exploded, showering the man with splinters, many embedding themselves into the arms he had thrown in front of his face at the last moment. Slowly lowering his arms, the man catches a brief glimpse of two burning, white, eyes, seemingly floating due to the pitch black figure they are attached to.

EXT DAY: Los Angeles Superior Court of Law

Female News Reporter
Hello, I’m Tricia Hanswell reporting for KCJB news. We are outside the trial of Roberto da Costa, son of Senator Emmanuel da Costa and Archaeologist, Nina da Costa. Roberto has been charged with the murder of Mark Hill, who had broken into their Beverly Hills home, and was reportedly killed by the enraged Roberto. We are waiting on word of the final verdict, which we have been told will be read any moment now.

INT: Court

Juror
On the count of First-degree murder, we, the jury, find, Roberto da Costa, innocent.

The verdict is met with almost equal amounts of boos and cheers; Roberto’s mother immediately leaned over and hugged her son, as his father shook hands with the lawyer, and then patted his son on the back.

EXT DAY: Court

The da Costa family made its way down the court steps, as several police officers helped clear a path for the family, through a sea of reporters, and further out, protesters.

Male News Reporter
Senator da Costa, what do you have to say about the rumours that your son is a mutant, and that you used your connections to get him a “not guilty” verdict?

Roberto froze in mid-step, turning to look at the man and gracing him with a brief, cold glance before continuing onwards, the leather of his gloves stretching over his knuckles as he clenched his hands.

The da Costas all climbed into the waiting limo, as they pulled away from the sidewalk, amidst innumerable flashing cameras.

Emmanuel da Costa
Roberto, your mother and I have been looking for a means of teaching you to control your, “abilities”.

Nina da Costa
We love you, Roberto, and we don’t want you to get hurt if you accidentally lose control.

Emmanuel da Costa
There is a school. It’s called Xavier University. They have state-of-the-art facilities. My contacts have told me that it is a very prestigious institute. And they specialize in educating children with “powers”. We can arrange for a tour and then you can decide on whether you want to enroll.

Roberto da Costa
Alright.
