My husband wants to know if you had a chance to meet or work with Rob Layton, and what your opinion, if you have one, is of his work, particularly on Iron Man.

I don't know a Rob Layton, but I did do some cover work with BOB Layton, in particular on Iron Man. Bob and I were good buddies at Marvel and he inked a number of my covers. I liked his work very much. We also had a lot of good times at conventions together, frequently in the company of Star Trek's Scotty--Jimmy Doohan--who was another friend of Bob's.

Unfortunately, Bob and I went our separate ways and I haven't seen him in many years.

(Sifts madly through the husband's books and pulls out Iron Man 4)

Bob, Rob- with that lettering and without my glasses, it looks the same. :\

Anyway, Barry will be pleased to hear that. But out of curiosity, which covers of yours did Bob Layton ink?

I'm a huge fan of Bob Layton (and David Michelinie) too.
Here is his site:

I don't remember numbers, but I believe that he inked some of the Iron Man covers that featured Jack of Hearts. There was also a cover that featured a dynamic full figure shot of Iron Man holding up some sort of electronic geat and being backlit by crackling energy. HO HO! I just checked my X-Men archives and kicked myself for my faulty memory: Bob inked my Uncanny #104, and I totally forgot(Smacking head)!

Actually, it was #105. #104 was Sam Grainger.

I think he also inked the art you did for an old Hulk calendar.

You're right, he did. And very nicely, too.

Upon further digging through our old books, we found one of your Iron Man comics Bob Layton inked, 110.

Well, the husband and I, while digging through his old Iron Man comics, got a good giggle out of this, but he was wondering if you had any insights as to what exactly was going on between Bob Layton and Shooter at the time that would lead to this.

I can't enlarge the copy on those panels enough to read them, but I would guess that Layton and Shooter were buddies at the time. They were, for a long time...may still be, for all I know...

It begins with, "Hi! I'm "Babyface" Bob Layton!" followed up with what all he'd been doing for Marvel, then why he had drawn this for the letters page. "I'm here because, lately, on this page, Big Jim has been making unflattering comments about me! No big deal. We are old friends, after all, and I can take a joke.

"But I want to make it perfectly clear that I have no association with or interest in any nuclear terrorist clone organizations! Also, even though I did once live near Three Mile Island, I am definitely not a radioactive mutant. All clear? Well then, good night, all!"

Then on the last panel, glow-in-the-dark Bob Layton says, "Drat."

I know. It was great for a giggle, but I had the feeling there might have been some inside joke involved.

LOL... Knowing the tenor of the time, shooter probably made some sort of offhand joke about something Layton wore being bright enough to glow in the dark... and everyone in the office was kidding Bob about it. sometimes Layton came into the office in weird stuff... He liked to affect the look of a sleazy gangster type on occasion, nd occasionally would wear period type clothing to the office... some of it kinda garish, if I remember correctly...
I didn't pay too much attention... I am weird enough myself not to cast aspersions on the dress choices of others...LOL... but somewhere in the back of my mind is a fairly flashy sharkskin suit...if the old brain cells aren't rotting entirely... and that may have set shooter off... there were times when he was sarcastically funny...
I could see him making some kind of snide remark about something Layton was wearing and Bob and Dave... cuz this was, obviously, Dave's art... doing the injoke and putting it on the leters page. this wasn't something that shooter would have taken offense at...he would have laughed heartily at the injoke...he liked in jokes...
that's probably what it was... something like that... I don't remember this particular incident... but that is the kind of joking we did , in the offices, back then...

Paty, I think you're mistaken about the art. I don't think I drew that. And I have sharp memories of Bob st rutting about in a white three-piece suit and black shirt, wih a green or orange tie, and rattling off a snappy patter like a black disc jocky. Bob was fun to be around.

I would guess Dave pencilled the "drat" panel at least. It's my husband's favorite. :)
