------------
SECRET INVASION: X-MEN #2 (of 4)
Written by MIKE CAREY
Penciled by CARY NORD
Cover by TERRY DODSON
As the Skrulls consolidate their hold on the West Coast of America, the X-Men's guerilla war enters a new phase. But
Nightcrawler is being subverted by a lost Skrull bible
, and the Beast's search for a last-ditch anti-Skrull weapon requires one extra ingredient: a Super-Skrull to dissect...
------------------------------

I don't have particularly high hopes for this one, despite Carey being the writer. After all Kurt's been through and seen, he's now being subverted by a lost Skrull Bible?? Into siding with an alien race invading his planet? It would take a LOT to convince me.

---------------------------------
UNCANNY X-MEN #502
Written by MATT FRACTION & ED BRUBAKER
Pencils & Cover by GREG LAND
The hunters become the hunted as the X-Men let the Hellfire Cult know they won't be going down without a fight. Beast brings a special guest star to visit the Cult's latest victim. Cyclops and Karma chalk up a victim of their own. Nightcrawler's extracurricular activities are brought to light. And learn, for the first time, what Wolverine listens to while fixing his car. All this and the team leaps into battle against the Cult in a full-frontal assault...the prize, San Francisco!
----------------------------

Kurt has extra-curricular activities?? This, I'm curious about. Except that it's drawn by Land, so I probably won't pick it up.

How do y'all feel?

Skrulls HAVE bibles??

Weird. Though I have been loving Carey so far.

Skrull-bibles, yay!...wit, no, that sucks! :shifty

No, seriously: We know that Skrulls have some kind of religion, so it's probably just an ill-chosen word for a holy book.

What I don't like is the ongoing fixation of Nightcrawler's religiosity, it makes him one-dimensional ><

Thank you freak! That's exactly what I was thinking. It's like some nerd is saying "well this is what kurt did a while ago soo..." :computer

and I think these extracurricular activities are going to be his studying the skrull "bible".

I'm a bit wary of two things, especially when they appear more or less at the same time: overemphasis on a character's religion, and, if I'm interpreting "extracurricular activities" correctly, signs that the overly religious character in question is ignoring his religion in certain areas of his life.

I'll probably read anyway. Kurt looks good in both previews, and hope springs eternal that I will be wrong about how his religion and extracurriculars will be handled.

Can't it be argued that he already does, though? We know he's had plenty of sex out of wedlock and he uses violence on a regular basis.

Wow, I so hope extracurricular activities is a euphemism for sneaking off and having sex with a human female.

So all of you who you hope that's NOT it... well, your dreams are all going to come true. He's probably working in an orphanage or something.

Also LMAO!!!! OMG HAHAHAHAHA ROTFLMAO!!!! Skrull bible! Is that like the Bible in the Da Vinci Code? Are they implying his faith is very weak and easily subverted by alternate "Bibles"?

Well, that would be a misrepresentation of religion to say it is completely opposed to violence in all circumstances.

As for the sex, I keep those filed away in the "And just what were they thinking when they wrote that?" category.

Maybe they were thinking that he is a healthy dude in his 20s.

With absolutely no self-control or respect for women or belief in Catholic morality.

*sigh* I don't really fit in with the rest of the world. But then, I was never a healthly 20-year-old male, though I dated a few.

No respect for women? Nah. The rest of it... sure. But he was the type who only openly prays when he thinks he's going to DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH when they first started up with this Catholic morality business so a few indiscretions make sense. Who knows what happened to make him go nuts with it. It was in the six month gap. Chuck Austen says it was mind control. I'm willing to agree with Austen for once.

He has been such a stuffed shirt lately, he desperately needs to get some. He can "disrespect" me all he wants, and I know I'm not alone! :coy

In real life, among real life friends, I am The Prudely One. I can't imagine being any farther out into the prudosphere! It boggles my mind.

Heh. Take a class on NFP, and you'll quickly discover there's nothing prudish about Catholic morality.

I'm hoping he is working in an orphanage, or, as I suggested on the Marvel forums, he is using his circus skills to entertain terminally ill children in a hospital ,or perhaps he is working with handicapped children. There are so many possibilities.

Doing something for others fits his personality much better than having a "clandestine" relationship with someone.

That stuff is boring.

Link to Marvel forums? I want to see if anyone is posting dirty speculative gossip.

Uh, what? Sure, he's not following Catholic morality to a T, but there's still quite a gap between that and someone who has absolutely no self-control or respect for women. Kurt has plenty of both.

The only long-term writer who wrote him as sleeping around was Austen, and that just with a throwaway joke remark. Kurt's flirted a lot, but he's only slept with Amanda, Cerise and Anjulie that I can recall. Amanda and Cerise, he was in a relationship with (he was even planning on proposing to Amanda) and Anjulie pretty much literally threw him into bed. He treaded VERY warily with Christine, to the point where she offered to sleep with him and he declined in a respectful way. I think he likes to play the charmer as a role, but he's not preying on women by any means.

I think the thing is that Kurt is not being written by a Catholic. To the writers and most non-religious people, sex before marriage is something they take for granted. They integrate the parts of religion they find interesting into him and leave out the parts they don't like. We're supposed to see him as moral because he follows the writers' guidelines of morality.

Well, the encounter with Anjulie was described as him showing no self control. "He's just a man. Raging hormones and all," or something like that. Not exactly a flattering description of a man who demonstrated self-control there.

Regardless, I do find the idea of him sleeping with someone outside of marriage rather dull and unfortunately typical. Using "extracurricular activities" to describe working in an orphanage would be original.

It's been awhile, but I think that line was referring to whatserface's father.

There was no need to justify Nightcrawler sleeping with Anjulie. She was hot! She got him naked and came onto him. Who's gonna say no? You? Sure. You are a middle-aged woman. I wouldn't have said no. She was hot! I do resent the implication of "lost control" like he as a whole person didn't want to have sex, it was just the devil inside making him do it or some junk like that.

I don't know how a hardcore Catholic writer would handle the dubious morality of all the other characters in the book. :P

Not in that instance, no, but that was a one-time instance in Kurt's history. 99,9% of the time, he's an extremely disciplined guy who is very respectful of other people's feelings, men and women alike.

Well, and we have to consider the source. Wasn't it like... Kitty making that comment? (It was either Kitty or Rachel I'm sure...) I mean... that comment seems a bit tongue in cheek, yeah? Plus it's obvious Anjulie was a hardcore temptress. Okay, so Kurt slipped up that ONE TIME... he got his blood pumping playing pirate at the beginning of that issue... just got a bit carried away.

Okay, so is it clear that I'd forgive the guy pretty much anything? XD

And since it seems to be a point of contention-

BIBLE
Etymology:

1capitalized a: the sacred scriptures of Christians comprising the Old Testament and the New Testament b: the sacred scriptures of some other religion (as Judaism)2obsolete : book3capitalized : a copy or an edition of the Bible4: a publication that is preeminent especially in authoritativeness or wide readership

So, I don't see why the skrulls can't have a bible. (*A* bible, clearly not *the* Bible we judeochristian types use.) Heh, I myself have several issues of aJapanese fashion magazines that goes by the name "Gothic & Lolita Bible". How's THAT for a contradiction? XD

Sure, the Skrulls can have a bible. The comments are because any other character getting sucked in by an alien bible would be not half as funny as it happening to the biggest Christian on the whole team.

Ahhhh, well yes, of course. I see EVERY OTHER character doing something more like "WTF is this? Pssh... I don't even care for earth religions, you think I'm gonna look at this garbage?" ::toss::
