Should Kurt leave the X-men?

Kurt really was popular following X2

X2 is why he sucks now, imo. It doesn't get all the blame, but pushing him even further in the direction of passive blob was not a good move. He was already a bit too sensitive and then it's like, hey, this shitty direction is really working! People love it! Look how popular he is when he's shitty! MORE SHIT! Quick, pile it on. Oh this is going to be great!

He's too much of a pussy now. He's not even written as properly human. He used to push through the insecurity to expand his comfort zone and that was why he was such a great character but he doesn't even bother any more. He just sits around and waits for someone else to tell him what to do. The Nightcrawler series was addressing this, but it got canceled.

I definitely agree with that. All of that. I liked X2, but then I liked all three movies, regardless of the portrayal of the characters since I knew they were AU. (Kurt's scars were a little over the top, though.) .> But the movies influenced the popularity and/or writing of many characters, especially in Ultimate and especially characters like Iceman and Rogue, and Shadowcat. And, of course, Nightcrawler. Did you ever read the "pre-X2 Nightcrawler" comic? I didn't like it because, really, it could have been a fanfic. It made sense in context with the movie though. But it really did help Kurt get stuck in this rut. >.<

Annnd I've made pro and con posts about the Nightcrawler series, but when it comes down to it, I loved it. Shame it got canceled. Was there ever a reason given for that? It was probably just lack of people buying it. *sigh*

Actually, the story I heard was there were too many solo series and not enough readers for all of them. The real tragedy is that Cable kept his book (well, shares it with Deadpool) and everyone else loses out.

I personally didn't like the way they were headed in the solo series (too dark) but then change the writer, change the artist, but don't cancel the series. They make it seem like Wolverine was soooo popular when it came out or Cable, but the writers believed in the characters or the editors believed in the characters or in the writers and they kept plugging away until they formed some good stories.

Kurt should be a writer's dream: unique look, special assortment of powers, conflict and drama in his background, great personality, connections to many interesting heroes and villians, mutant angst, um, what did I miss? He is a natural showman, acrobat, and martial artist. His powers make him one of the sneakiest characters in the MU. I am not a writer and I can think of like 10 to 15 good solid plots that you can do with him.

Since Kurt gets along with just about everyone, maybe they should do a Marvel Team Up-type series with Kurt and somebody else working together. It could give a chance for other characters to shine but keep Kurt in the limelight. It worked for Spiderman.

Should Kurt leave the X-men?

Amen! I think I would like a duo series more than a solo series. Not only do you get double the fans reading it, but if the writers focus on two characters rather than one, there's maximum chance for character development.

Since I've been reading more of Excalibur lately, I've been feeling more and more that what people (like Drastic Spastic) have been saying on this board - that the current Kurt is little more than a blot on the wall - is true. He was really incredible during Excalibur, as a fighter, a hero, a lover, and a friend. Heavens, he actually made himself a few enemies. The strangest thing is that Claremont was the one who took him so far, but he was also the cause of his regression, since Kurt started heading downhill as soon as he returned to the X-men under Claremont's writing. As I understand it, Claremont was trying to revitalize interest in comics by returning to what he knew worked: the 80s X-men. Which explains why Kitty was de-aged and why Kurt returned to the background (gotta keep ol' One Eye in the spotlight so people don't forget about him, y'know). And then he never came out of it.

Call me a dreamer, but I don't think such a cool character can remain in the background for ever. We'll see a return of Cool Crawler. Or, if anything, the ascent of Some Crawler. Whether or not we'll like That Crawler is uncertain. But it'll happen!!!
