A Song of Ice and Fire

For Fergie ;) And myself of course.

So, I was really slow on jumping on the tv series which I beat myself severely over, because oh good lord how brilliant was it? The acting, the costume, the directing, all of it was so very well done it was quite difficult to find fault. Instead I'd just sit and gape a bit, then remember to wipe drool from my mouth.

But - then I was all 'HEY! I always meant to read these books, I really should!' then I was pretty much slamming my head in the door at the fact I hadn't read the series sooner! I'm currently on 'A Feast for Crows' and I am finding its lagging a little - too many new POVs to the series maybe? But on the whole it's good.

So, favourite characters? Who you can't wait to see in season two of the show?

Favourite Characters: Jon Snow, Arya and I have to say Asha Greyjoy just because of that one scene... Littlefinger and Tyrion are badass mofos as well. I havea lot of other favourites in addition.

Who I'm looking forward to seeing? "You know nothing, Jon Snow."

Annnnd. I do not like Sam. I just don't. Sorry.

Please no spoilers or I'll set a direwolf on you.

I've neither read the book nor watched the show, but heard so many good things about it already. Always meant to catch an episode and see what it was all about, but kinda forgot about it. Now I know I shouldn't postpone it anymore, I guess. :scratch

A Song of Ice and Fire

This show is so so so SO damn good. I've never read the book, but the show took me like crazy this spring. I wasn't so into it when it first started, but sitting down with it for a few episodes drew me in and I couldn't stop watching.

Favorite characters? CLEARLY Daenerys. She ended the season on an incredible note, and her whole story through the entire first season was spectacular. Coming from the place of a scared girl at the whim of her brother, to the queen of the DothRaki was beautiful to watch, and the final scene of the season was HUGE.

Other than that...I'm feeling Sansa. Granted, she's a spoiled bitch and she's pretty weak right now, I see her taking a big role in the coming war, from inside the palace. The last episode where she [spoilers]was made to both watch her father be beheaded, then stare at his head on a pike[/spoilers] was incredibly moving. I cannot wait until this show comes back!

But Lil - can I just tell you, my LEAST favorite character was Jon Snow. The whole winter guard thing was a chore for me. To each their own, obviously, but clearly big things are coming for them next season, and I'm excited to see what comes of it.

Oh Dany is an excellent character, one I don't have that high on my personal list but you can't deny her strenght as she's dragged herself along through a really crappy set of circumstances to where she is now. It's a brilliant piece of development and I think the actress for her is great. Although I do think most of my interest in her is to do with her house and her dragons. Of all the characters that are just referenced to I find the Targaryens the most interesting, especially Rhaegar.

I like Sansa too, I didn't at first in the tv series or in the first book, but when you get to the next you really see her come on to where she is now. Which is in a really crazy situation, but she's handling it with real strenght. So yeah, I like her but she's been a slow burn character for me to warm to.

My love of Jon Snow again is more based on the books. I don't think the tv show has done a bad job portraying him, but obviously they're working to a time constraint so they have to skimp sometimes. Jon is definately more interesting in the book and you also see him relfecting more on his position within the Stark family, or rather lack of position.

The books are killer long, but I've found it worth it and my attention span is like a gnats at times, so if I can manage them, then most people should be able to.

Lil, I am with you all the way on favourite characters and also 100% with Nacht on Dany and Sansa as well. Sansa in later books is just impressive. I find people are always one way or the other when talking about whether or not they like Jon but I've always enjoyed him, though admittedly, I'm holding out to see what kind of a shitstorm it is going to be when his lineage is actually put out there.

Once in a while the POVs do get a bit jarring, especially at the start of the newer books. Despite that I am absolutely dying to get my hands on A Dance with Dragons. I've tried so hard not to spoil myself for it but I know I'm going to do it any day. The books are definitely worth the read no matter your attention span (and Star, you absolutely must. You will love the series)

As for Sam, I'm not sure what I think about Sam sometimes but I think he finally grew on me.

I know I need to give Jon more of a chance. Like lil said, the books are enormous and clearly stuff had to be cut for the show. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for next season. And Ferg, his lineage will cause a shit storm? Oooooo I'm interested!!

Well, it's not ever been said for absolute fact in the books either. It's just one of those things I'm waiting and seeing on, enjoying all the little rumours that pop up.

Ooh yes, there are plenty of interesting speculations about young Jon.

I'm getting A Dance with Dragons as soon as I can afford it. I've been finishing one book and picking up the next, which has been good as I havent had to wait, but also bad as I occasionally find it hazy keeping track of what happened where. Also, the fact they split A Storm of Swords into two in the UK probably doesnt help with keeping track either.

Waiting for Sam to grow on me. It's just not happening. I prefer reading Cersei to be honest, though I love hating her, the vicious madam!

Game of Thrones -- WHAT?!

Postby Ult_Sm86 » Fri Sep 16, 2011 1:08 pm

So, 'Game of Thrones' on HBO is made of awesomeness.

If you were a fan of the book series and had to miss the TV show, I suggest you grab it immediately. Talk about well done!

For anyone who got confused during the first 3-4 episodes of GoT (lord knows I rewatched the 1st episode about 3 times) there's this:
HBO's Game Of Thrones: Illustrated Guide to Houses & Character Relationships

The best part of this show is it has spawned a lot of great internet jokes and memes.

So as of last night (April 1st, 2012) Game of Thrones Season Two kicked off.

I'm halfway through the episode now (YAY DVR!) and I gotta say -- WOW. This is some great stuff.

Already major development with the characters. We even have dragons now and the wolves got much bigger.

Also, this little twat child-king needs to DIE.

Well, now that I believe most everyone that watches it here has seen the most surprising birth of the season, what do we think of that all?

Also, one of my favourite characters has rolled into the storyline for the show so may I just give a hurray for Brienne of Tarth?

And what do we think of the Greyjoys so far?

I'm still trying to get the family names right so greyjoys and whoever that is (I'm assuming the lady guard?) I'm not sure.
As for the birth.... What in the Hell?

Yes, you're assuming right about Brienne. They Greyjoys are Theon's family so the whole Pyke and the Iron Islands storyline with him essentially trading in Robb to go with his family. (and, sidenote, I am way, way too amused that they changed his sister's name to Yara because with the pirate theme the family has I can't help but call her Yarrrrrra).

What the hell indeed, have you gotten to what came out of said birth did?

Yup!

And just to check, Stanus & Remly are Robert's younger brothers. Both have no offspring or ruling heirs, correct?

Who was Loras Tyrell? He was one of the council who Tyrion ousted/jailed/banished, right?

And aren't there two Targaryens, off spring of Daeniris' OTHER brother? Who haven't entered the show yet?

I've just gotten into this in the last few weeks. I watched the whole first season in two days while I was sick and got hooked in a big way. Never read the books, and I don't know that I will. I kind of like the shocks like Ned's death and the shadow baby crack.

The lady knight is really ... intense. I'm not sure how I feel about her yet. Her apparent obsession with Renly came off a little creeper to me.

And Renly! :bawl I liked him! He seemed a relatively decent person, and a great smart ass, and I can get behind that. Stannis also creeps me out.

Isn't Loras just a knight from another powerful house? He's said his family has almost as much money as the Lannisters, so clearly that was the plan -- Renly would be king and the Tyrell family would be the bankroll.

I'm really interested right now in the girl who's stuck with papa Lannister (blanking on her name). She's got an interesting friend there in "a man." A man is also frigging impossible to understand without rewinding six times.

I don't remember much from when I first read the Arya and Jaqen (a man) bits but he is definitely an interesting character and yeah, I've been having the same problems with his scenes.

And Renly would have absolutely been my king too as his brother is just...yeah. I guess it takes some creepy to be a shadow baby daddy yet be a giant prude.

As for Brienne all of the crack of hers I enjoy is upcoming so I'll just sit in the corner here chuckling about bears.

Took me (what felt like) half-an-hour to find this damn thread. Christ, I wish it would just get renamed to "Game of Thrones Book/Show thread" or something.

Anyways... WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?!

I mean I had been told about it and I knew it was coming but still!

BUT STILL!

Image

My reaction was sheer horror. Image a bit like this. Just flat out unthinkable.

I couldn't comprehend such well written, well fleshed out, brilliant characters getting the axe like that. It's... It's so edgy! I LOVE IT!

Image I love that Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Imgur and more are all exploding with viral memes and such. It's awesome. I have to say at times it's great, I feel like we're in this great community of fans and at other times I wonder if it's too much...

All I know is this caption for this picture has to be true because my sister bawled her eyes out last night.

Here is a video of George R.R. Martin reacting to viewer reactions of last week's episode, the obvious Red Wedding. Hilarious.
