The Netflix Queue: Precious

So, I've recently gotten Netflix, and I have been adding movies to my queue that I have always been meaning to see. I find myself with little time to really commit a full 2 hours to, but my Tuesday babysitting allows me quite a bit of freedom, so I'm gonna start chipping away at the queue. And I figure, why not share it? So for the first installment of what may only be one installment, but may be more if I'm feeling motivated (and have the time. I can be written-out with the articles I have to write for the website I work on sometimes.)

Anyway, we can make this short and sweet. So onward!

Today I tackled Precious and LORD, what an undertaking that was. This movie is just the pinnacle of depressing, it-gets-FAR-worse-before-it-gets-marginally-better coming of age movie. Prepare to cry, prepare to lose yourself in this incredible story of a girl who just wants a way out, and there really is none available. Or she perceives it that way. And she's not willing to risk everything until she has something to risk it for.

I don't really want to go giving away the plot, but it centers on Precious and her horrifically abusive mother. She finds herself in predicaments outside her control (hint: She's pregnant for the second time at 16, and not through her own doing) and just wants to live and go to school and do something with her life. She frequently day dreams, and they come as this quick escapes from the depressing reality of her life. In all, she's just a kid trying to cope with horrific situations in her life, and trying to make the decisions best for her.

I really loved this movie. It was sad and it really just got sadder as the movie progressed, but in the end it lifted. Not a ton, but it lifted. It's a snapshot of real life, and not everyone gets the prince or the mansion, but we all manage to get by eventually, and that's what I saw as the real lesson here. And she managed to grow and become strong, and it was beautiful to watch.

And Monique? HOLY SHIT. WHAT an amazing performance. I wanted to applaud her at times. I can't believe what she managed to bring to this role. It was beyond incredible. At the very end, she really brought it home. It was something to behold.

Highly recommended. Have you seen it?

Yes I have. It was pretty tremendous piece of film making but I can't go back and watch it again. It's too emotionally unnerving. It battered me, inside. Honestly.

But if you got Ques up and you enjoyed that movie, I got some other great suggestions for you, if you'd like 'em.
