February Writing Challenge Entry: Unguarded Moments Poem etc.

Post by Elfdame »

Kurt sat at Elise's comuter -- his wife's computer! what a happy thought! -- and tried to put into words how he felt about their strange and often frustrating courtship. After their fencing session, he had graciously said that the loser could shower first; she had replied, "How kind of you. As if I ever win."

He preferred not to remember the one and only time she had bested him in that area. And used the free time, while she was occupied, to give expression to his romantic side.

"En garde," you said,
And I took my stance;
Against your defense
I stood no chance,
But in unguarded moments
I touched your core
And the kindness I found
Left my heart wanting more.

In "en garde" moments,
You stood tall and wary,
My feelings of romance
Pushed aside with each parry,
But in unguarded moments
You let slip the mask,
A touch on the cheek
Was a possible task,
It seemed such a small thing
For your Elf to ask,
For an unguarded moment
In which love could bask.

Unguarded moments!
I thank God for those:
No failing foibles,
No defensive pose,
No sharp point between us,
No hopes pierced and foiled,
A dance between equals,
Purity unsoiled.

Further and further
You fled from attack,
I met you head on
But found only your back
Until, fallen and weary,
You opened the door
To that dear one inside,
And you let me see more.

Too much right of way
Was the wrong way to win;
It brought forth hostility,
Made you feel caged in.
Pursuing too hotly,
I endangered my bout;
Backed into a corner,
You sought a way out.
You feared not a fight
Nor avoiding sword's scratch,
But respect for your freedom
Would win me the match.

There were times when you made me
The butt of your jokes;
Like siblings we traded
Verbal catcalls and pokes.
My expressions of love
Were met with derision
And attempts at fine romance
Caused only division.

But in unguarded moments,
Like a rose at first bloom
I received tender insights
Which cast off my gloom,
For your heart opened up,
Spread love all about me;
In those vulnerable times
You forgot to doubt me.
Such fragrant, soft blossoms,
Your kindness and concern,
A day surely would come
When my love you'd not spurn.

Those sweet times of closeness
When you let your guard down
Brought happiness untold
Although brief, caution-bound,
But at last my friend lowered
Her mask, and inside
The true love I knew
No longer would hide.
She allowed me within
The gates of her soul
In delight, I captured
My romantic goal.

No longer a fence
Must I climb just to hold her
To accept my embrace
My love is now bolder.
Together we stand,
Distinct, yet as one,
In the heavenly ardor,
A life new begun.

The door to their bathroom opened a crack and steam came roiling out. "Furball," Elise's voice wafted as if a ghost spoke through the mists, "your turn."

He sat back, wondering if he had the guts to show it to her. Would she punch him a bit too hard in the shoulder and make a comment complete with eye-rolling? Or would that soft smile spread over her face like icing on the sweetest of cakes?

Only a brave man would dare to find out. The Incredible Nightcrawler was known world-wide -- even on other planets, in fact -- for his fearlessness, his habit of jumping into danger and never despairing over a hopeless situation. He feared no man, no alien, no mutant alive.

Mrs. Elise Wagner puttered into the bedroom, twisting a towel around her hair. "Facebooking again? Or answering your backlog of fan mail?" She was almost behind him, ready to peer over his shoulder at the screen.

Large blue fingers punched at the keys to save the poem it in an encrypted file. "Ah, I just remembered that I must help one of the new X-men. I'll have to shower later." The Incredible Nightcrawler turned his face toward his true love, kissed her, and immediately teleported to the Danger Room to face a less daunting obstacle.

Very good poem.

I love the ending -- sort of funny and poignant at the same time.

:surprise

Now how am I gonna choose?!?

RIP Kurt Wagner. You were the character who brought in me into comics, who introduced me and inspired me. Now your death has sent me away again. Wherever you are in the Marvel Universe, I hope its someplace pleasant.

If my Hubby ever read this, he'd, um, see some similarities to RL. (Not in what they did, mind you -- unlike many of the Scrawlers, I do not fence or do anything remotely as interesting as my OC does.) Nightcrawler, in my AU, is not henpecked ... but it took a while for his wife to warm up to "all that mushy stuff."

And srsly, I only put this up here to encourage the lurkers who might be afraid by the awesomeness that has already been posted. They will look at this piece of tripe and go, "Shoot," (or if they are from Southern USA, "Shee-oot!"), "I can beat that with my eyes closed, and I don't even touch-type."

But thx for the encouragement. :D

...

Egad. Re-read it and saw a typo. I am so slipping.

Well, I'm sure several people have fansites for him on FB (I think neling and maybe Ang are fans at one?). I thought if it were IRL, an extrovert like Kurt would certainly have a presence there, and Elise would certainly tease him about cyber-adulation or whatnot.

Thanks for your kudos. I think it's actually kind of silly, but silliness is my forte. :D
