Post by Dark Bamf »

Hey, guys--Paty's been having a lot of trouble with her computer. It's been junked up with a lot of extraneous programs and stuff from nowhere, and was running impossibly slow. Our friend Cat worked on it and removed all that junk, but in doing so she discovered that Paty had a virus as well, and it was identified as having come from Nightscrawlers.

Cat couldn't discover anything more than that, but obviously someone who posts to Nightscrawlers has inadvertantly (or advertantly) infected the site with a virus. It's not affecting my iMac, but if any of you are having trouble, you might want to check your machines. And 'Crawler, Bamfette, you may want to check the site itself.

I'm going to ask our Tech guy to contact you about the virus. That's bad news.

As for what you said in your U2U (I'm unable to deleted enough of mine to get around the quote because there's still people who haven't read the Password message)...it's not intentional from anyone here.

The software we're currently running for the board is full of security holes and seems to be a popular target right now.

It has NOTHING to do with her views. And, I suppose this may still come as a shock, despite my having said it many times before, we have nothing against her or you, especially not for her views.

I asked her to cool her jets a bit because it was to the point where it was getting out of hand. I've asked the same of people who had been expressing themselves in the same manner about Austen, Claremont, and others.

There is no Nightscrawlers conspiracy. ;)

OK..everybody... I'M BACK!!!
Dave told me that Crawler had posted just recently that Nightscrawlers had been hacked and all our passwords stolen...and that was how my computer was sabotaged. I had seventy eight viruses and programs contracted through Nightscrawlers that were all trying to run at the same time and not letting me do anything!
Cat... an absolute marvel of computer wizardry...who owns her own hosting company... cleaned every one of the little buggers out, and put up firewalls and virus protection that would stop Desert Storm! She promises to get me a program soon that will not only stop my recieving such crapola.. but will warn the sender once and the second time I am sent crap, it will return zap the sender's computer into never never land! She knows much and has access to wonderful stuff! Ha!

but in regard to the hacker and the need for changing our passowrds... If the scumbag did it once, what's to keep him from doing it again??? every time we find out he has hacked in, do we have to change our passwords cuz this low life doesn't have anything else to do with his time??? Is there some way to keep the walking talking rectum from hacking us? Or at least from stealing our passwords? Do we even know who did it? Because all the junk which came in via Nightscrawlers, came in through a password opening picked up here sometime after I got my totally rebuilt computer back on June 13!!! that ain't a lot of time, folks!
I'm OK...and gonna get better as soon as Cat installs the retro-zapper program. I just wish I could electrocute the bastard...not just totally wipe his damn devilbox! Cuz creeps like that make using the internet impossible for computer illiterate people like me. Cat knew exactly what to look for and how to remove ALL of it..even two tough trojan viruses that didn't want to go away...but someone like me is a babe in the wolfwoods. All I dnew was that I couldn't even get to yahoo...and when I did, I couldn't even get to Nightscrawlers or any where else!!!
She fixed it and made it so it won't happen again...but I worry about others who don't have a "cat" at their disposal! Has anyone heard of anyone else having this kind of trouble? Am I the only one who got targetted? or was unlucky enough to not have the protections that would have shed this crap like water from a duck's back??? Anyone who doesn't have a firewall or anyone who isn't protected by a heavyduty virus protection or anyone who is running Windows ME is at risk! Or so Cat says...These buggies come in on a password opener program...and may have something to do with the hacking and password theft that Crawler posted about. If so, it is VERY recent...since some of the interloping programs and viruses were contracted in mid June!
So, good friends and fellow Nightscrawlers, check your computers for programs that you shouldn't have...and viruses you shouldn't have, either. I had 78 of 'em! If your computer is running slow, you may have some, too. If you are experiencing "overloaded resource" warnings or an inability to access things that were formerly easy to access, you may have to go hunting and deleting not only viruses but the piggyback programs they let in to your computer. Crap like...Shopping networkd...porn sites...crap I have never visited in my lfe and never intended to...sigh...but there they were! Amazing! And I couldn't even get to Yahoo to read mail for several days!!!

OK... so now I am back..behind a firewall and with super virus protection...and soo to be cannon for return fire...but I may still not be on a lot for a while.

We bought this house and it had on the corner, a restaurant building...which we rented out to a couple who said they wanted to put in a variety store and small luncheon counter...which was cool with us. Well, it turned out they really wanted to segue it into a bar! Brought in a pool table, pinball machine and juke box...then applied for a license to sell and consume on premises beer and wine! Well, we went to the liquor board and told them of the underhandedness and false pretenses of the couple and the license was denied and they left. NOW the building is gonna be Dave's studio! So I gotta start ferrying all the stuff in thebarn...which had a flood and we don't know how much of our books and tapes and stuff are ruined...up to the new studio/gallery. It's just ME doing this, kiddies... Dave is still wheelchair bound and my sis has a bad back and weight restrictions...so it's gonna be a long couple of weeks as I try to set up his new studio...so bear with me if I don't get on as much as I have heretofore.
All you loyal Magneto fans...we need to support Chris and his depiction of Magneto!!! I hear that the Morrison mindlsaves have been screaming at the top of their puerile lungs...it doesn't matter that their tin god is no longer at Marvel and that Marvel marches on...NO! they are a ravening hoarde bound on having it all their way, only their way! PTUI!!!
So support Chris with letters and emails to the guys in my signature!!! there are still fights to be fought at marvel...and points to be won...and good writers to defend!

As you can see, I am still on the soapbox!!!
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEEEE

We think we plugged the hole that let him in. It could happen again, but it would have to be via a different method.

We're slowly figuring out where the holes are. This particular one would have been patched via an official "patch pack" but we were unable to download it at the time.

Bamf Bunny, our tech guy, has since taken out the one part of that pack that we needed for this guy and patched that hole.

We're hoping that the holes are all patched, but people are always finding new ones. It's an endless battle. Not much fun at all.

But rest easy that it's not anyone here doing it. The last two hack have come from people that were randomly attacking boards that run this software.

And it's definitely not US doing it. :)

C and Jill, this place is like a second home to me. I've said this to Jill but I want to let you know and everyone know that I say this out of concern. 1.8 SP1 is full of security holes. You really need to upgrade or upload fresh files that are 1.8 SP3 and then apply what I call SP4 patches to those files. I believe there are ten files. Then and only then will you be at least safer. You guys have been hacked many times since I've been here this past year. I believe the only way to solve many of these issues is to upgrade all the files and re-install the hacks. Granted that is a pain in the ass but at least you may have a lesser problem with hackers. There is a website that will install hacks for you. This way you guys wouldn't have to worry about doing it yourselves. Or these hacks can be found in several websites if you still prefer to do it yourselves.

Again, I'm not trying to preach to both of you and as I said I say this in concern because I care about all of you here and I hate to see Nightscrawlers constantly bombarded with hackers.

Yes, hackers find versions of XMB boards with security holes in them. That is why it is important to keep all you files current. Btw, a good webhosting company should be doing a virus scan of all their servers on a nighty basis. My site does. They always check for viruses.

Paty, if you didn't have some sort of virus protection or firewall going I'm not surprised that you got that many viruses. It is so essential that you have these two in place. I'm always updating and have them constantly going. Another thing you probably got a lot of was spyware. I hate that stuff and some people say they are all for it. That will slow your computer down. Jerks!

Sorry if I sound too preachy.

LOL...yeah, well... my original computer crashed...and I am wondering if the viruses didn'tget it...cuz there was no reason for it to go blooey...although I understand that computers don't need a reason to do anything they do that is detrimental to human sanity.

I had to have it completely rbuilt...and theguys at Radio Shack said it would be like getting a new computer. Well, when I roiginally got this one, it HAD Norton on it...so I guess I assumed the new download had it too...Cat said i didn't have anything! so I was a sitting duck!
But she also said that whoever sent me this load of shit was a novice. They didn't have the sense or knowledge to hide their trail...so she traced it right back to Nightscrawlers. She said they knew enough to colect viruses and to be able to send them...but didn't erase or hide their trail...which is simply either stupidity or ignorance...she guesses ignorance... since an experienced hacker can easilly hide his trail... and will!

I make no bones about it... I am a computer dummy...as are a lot of my generation. We use the internet for email and to talk to people in forums like this one...that's all! A lot of innocent older fold are basically hamstrung by young shitheads who have nothing better to do with their time than send out viruses and programs that so junk up a computer that it cannot run properly...which is the position I found myself.
Cat had put all kinds of protections on my former computer programming which is why I am sure these buggies come in on the new programming. They wer just waiting for an opportunity...and an unprotected computer whose password you know is a sitting duck

Crawler, dear... I don't think it was you or Jill or any of the staff people here at Nightscrawlers. We may bicker amongs ourselves, but we are adults here and, I would hope, above such puerile actions. I think we had a hacker.. a mole that used the site...and was not intelligent or savy enough to hide the tracks...or maybe he wanted it tracked to here and not somewhere else...who knows?

All I know is that I am now VERY well protected! Ha! Take that, you bastards! I only wish all folk who are novices in computer ville had a friend like Cat to teach them. she is explaining certain hard facts and showing me how to do this and that to guard myself from here on in. I am becoming more computer savvy every day! LOL Maybe some day I will know enough to track down nasty people...but until that probably impossible day,...I shall be protected and monitored by someone those people better wish they never meet!

BUT some how I managed to pick up not one but three stupid viruses! GRRRRRRRRR!!!! I feel for you Paty, I'm pooter illiterate too. Ken - the problem is the hacks we want the MOST, the ones that are most important to us, are exclusive to a site that went belly up. I have been unable to find those hacks ANYWHERE else. i can't re-apply them, i can't get them again. if we were to do that, we'd lose the spoiler hack, the warning hack, the member approval, the rules, and several others...

and Paty... i dunno, most viruses these days spoof where they came from. they come from one place, but make it look like they came from another. usually an email address in an infected persons address book is lifted. I'd appreciate if you could get Cat to tell the specifics to Bamf Bunny. he's our tech-god here, and he says he has patched the site against future attacks of this type. but I've been sent viruses by myself, supposedly, because it spoofed one of my emails and sent to another. and i often get bounced virus mails 'sent back' because it spoofed my address. but i assure you, i have an up-to date Norton Anti-Virus on my system, and a firewall. I preform monthly full system scans. i also have backups of every file on NS stored on my computer, and it detected no virus on there...

Nah, Jill...Cat says that one or two spoofs might be hacked through but not fifty seven or eight...This is a deliberate target job. I U to Ud BB and had Cat talk computerese...haven't the foggiest what she said...LOL but she thinks that nightscrawlers protections have wide open back doors that allow hackers to shut you down and send poison files through the site.
Yesterday I went to only one site...Nightscrawlers and I had I believe, eighteen direct attacks including a trojan virus picked up by the firewall she installed. she said the amount of stuff sent to my computer is totally impossible to have been spoofed...or whatever it is called...misdirected and camoflaged.
Now, with the exception of the deservedly negative comments on Morrison's work and my dissatisfaction with Byrne's behavior for the past twenty years, I don't have an enemy in the world...and it wasn't until I began to critique Morrison and NOT back down that the Morrison geeks got crazed. I changed my password here yesterday...and still got deluged with crap. So today I changed the password on my home computer to a different passowrd than the one I fuse for nightscrawlers...cuz if someone can hack a pasword once, they can do it again unless the leak is plugged... and it looks like it isn't yet...at least not here. Cat says this willhelp but I hate changing my password... I liked the one I had. these bastards are like bin Laden...even if they don't win, they affect us in subtle ways...and change our behavior patterns... so inessence, they DO win.. at least somewhat. And that pisses me off tremendously! whe the witch is pissed, she does nasty things. Just wait, you little dogturds ... your time is coming.

The whole thing is soooo sucky! I would love to go after those little hacker bastards with a sharp blade...and if and when I can do that, believe me, I will. These people do not deserve to live. they make life difficult for anyone who doesn't genuflect to their version of "god"... or just for malicious fun. It is sad to think that they may be here amongst us.
but if no one else is experiencing the pure volume of crapola that has tried to come through in the last twenty four hours! that I have recieved, both Cat and I can only think that I am being targetted and they are using Nightscrawlers to do it. I just hope it doesn't spill over to others on the site! Panz said she had three viruses...I had dozens! A hundred and ninety programs and viruses from sites I never ever knew existed! Blammo... right at me! Is anyone else out there having humongous attacks on their firewalls? I would love to know. Not just one or two... but literally dozens..at last count over a hundred ninety! This is not just random crapola, kiddies.
But free speech and honest criticism and the ability to state one's opinion shall not die! Such a thing threatens all of us...when a minority can dictate what can be said with impunity , all our freedoms we value so much are at risk. It will never happen if I can help it. they will have to kill me to shut me up! Ha! Take that you computer rats!

thanks for the concern. but in reality we have only been hacked twice. it just so happens they happened within a short time of one another. I'll get around to it, eventually. but I just don't have the time right now. I looked at XMB Garage, but the section where you're supposed to request they hack your board was 'unavailable' i guess they're taking a break. and i would want to install certain ones myself irregardless... the spoiler hack, for instance, i changed quite heavily. hacking the board again will take days, and i just can't afford to do that right now, i have too much other stuff to get done. (am not counting the hacking attempt on the chat. since that is wholly un-related to the forum. and that security hole, and this one, have been fixed) some people have taken to assuming that any downtime is due to hacking when it is not... it's just server hiccups.

and Paty, i am sorry, but i still just can't accept that the files are coming from here. I've looked as far as i am able, and i see no evidence of it. we can't be transmitting a file to you if we don't have that file on our system. and we don't. there isn't a single solitary exe file on the whole of Nightscrawlers and it's hosted sites. and NO ONE else is complaining of files being transmitted to them. if it was the site, it wouldn't be just targeting you. I have a firewall and nothing is coming to me from this site. I say someone who has you in their address book is infected. usually the simplist answer is the right one...

I dunno, Jill...as you know, and I make no bones about it, I couldn't tell where anything comes from or track a herd of elephants via computer. but I do trust Cat... she knows more about computers than anyone I have ever met, runs her own hosting company and spent a goodly deal of time debugging my computer. She knows how to trace and track buggies...and she said everything she traced came from or through Nightscrawlers. she didn't say Nightscrawlers was the point of origin, she just said it was probablly the conduit. I know she talked computer specifics to Bamf Bunny ... probqablly regarding the pathways she thought were being used and how it was done...I dunno...she tried to explain it to me and lost me after the first half dozen words...cuz she was talking computerese...a language I donn't know...yet...LOL
In any event, it's a moot point if no one else is being bothered, cuz she installed a shitload of stuff to protect me and it is doing it's job apparently. I was still recieving crap as long as my computer password was the one I used here. when I changed my password at home to a different one, suddenly the hits on my firewall shut down. Apparently, according to Cat, everything was coming through the open password link...and as long as my password on my home computer was the same one as here, I was getting hit through here. I only go to two other groups... and they didn't have the same password.
As I said, moot point in my case... I am well protected now. I don't know if Cat suggested some of the security devices and procedures she uses for her hosting company with BB, but my bet is that she did. Cat is generous with info of that ilk...she hates hackers with a passion cuz they make the internet unviable for the inexperienced computer user...like both Dave and me.
Interesting, though...

I tend to access this site from my workplace, which has a nasty firewall/virus detector setup going. The only time anything has ever tried to infect me is one point on FanFic.net: some creep had put a trojan on there to redirect you to their site. Every time I "flipped pages" there I got that warning that someone was trying to hit me with "J-random Trojan virus". (And to let you know, I contacted the admin for FF.net immediately, and within half an hour he'd scrubbed that sucker clean as a whistle. :) )

The point being that I've never had a virus aimed at me from anywhere but that, and I was alerted to its presence by my constantly active firewall. I'm flabbergasted that anyone has been getting viruses from this site at all, simply because I haven't, and I tend to go all over the place here, so if it was one page or two, I surely would have found it by now.

I'm computer-literate, but not tech-savvy. How can Paty get sixteen kajillion viruses slammed onto her, Panz get three, and I get none? Is it possible that someone is targeting people on the site instead of the site itself? Are they looking at certain usernames? Is that why the "password hack" was done? :?

I get to NS by my home PC, and we have alot of programs and such that my mom is constantly checking up on everything. We have Norton Anti-Virus, Firwall, the works. My mom puts blocks on just about everything, no spam, no viruse, no nothing. In fact, the last time we did get a virus was about four years ago, and none since then.

Paty, I asked my mom about what could have gone wrong with the Norton, but she has no clue. It has always worked for us:shrugMaybe someone just has it in for you or your computer, who knows. Why do people hack anyway, do they just have absolutely no life at all that they have to go and ruin things for others? To me that is just stupid and childish.

Thank goodness I was able to change my password, (I was going to anyway because my family has this habit of changing passwords all the time to reduce the risk of being hacked)I wasn't about to let some jerk find his way in through my password.

Well... in typical computer non savvy, I had the password to my groups as the password to my computer. won't do that again! You can bet! I wouldn't think of trying to silence someone with whom I did not agree, but some other people are not so secure in their own identities as I am. they have to look to someone else for identity and when someone is vocal about not liking the product of that person, they take it as an attack on them personallly! Or sometimes the little tin god they follow around tells them "will some one rid me of this terrible person who dares cast aspersions on my capabilities!?!" and they take the tin god literally... like that nastiness a couple of centuries ago with the Archbishop of Canterbury...LOL

Cat figures that the across the board password hack was done to camoflage the passwords they really wanted...me and people who agreed with me and were vocal saying so. Panz has been noted to agree with me often...as well as others...but some may have had more protection than others...

Because of the reinstallment of a new hard drive, I figured it would have on it what I had to begin with... which was Norton. Cat said she found no such thing... which meant i was wide open to the attack and it didn't take long for the buggies to pour in...especially when they had an open password door to assail. In fact, Cat said it was an open password link that let the buggies in...but they all came through Nightscrawlers...in some kind of conduit.
Cat said she did not tell BB what protections should be present on the site since, she said, some people are touchy about being told they are letting crap through. It scares off potential members...but such open back doors do no one any good and can be used to target someone specifically... which was definately done with me. It's ok... I am protected now...Norton wasn't at fault nor any other virus protection. The walking talking rectums at Radio Shack didn't install it...even though it was in the original programming... and then again, Cat says I have windows ME... which had so many holes it looked like a fishing net! She is gonna install a higher grade when she gets back from washington ... as well as more protection programs that she cannot access here but will bring with her.
she totally hates hackers and people who abuse the net for their own pleasure and self agggrandizement. Stupid little hacks, we'll getcha...
It's not a biggie... Cat was here. I have faith in her. Dave was mondo upset that such a thing could have come through here that he had a fit. But I continued to get hits on my firewall until I changed my home password to one that was different from the one here... so now the password here is different from any other password I have and if anything comes through again it will be all too easy to trace.
Cat says there was no mistake anyway.. she knows how to track and trace and she certainly was not a happy camper when she saw what someone had done. But she is not happy either with the risk that others were being put at because of such inept... as she called it... protection. she thought Jill would do well to heed Ken's admonitions and get some of the protections he touted.
It's a moot point... except for any others who maybe don't have enough protections...or know where to look for them.
I am no stranger to personal attacks because i lay it on the line, don't lie and tell it as it is. I am not inflexable, cuz if someone gives me more valid info that is good and contradicts my info, and I check it out and find it is more valid or current than my old info, I can and will alter my opinion if that course is warranted. But otherwise...NOT...as I said in my profile, I am learned and opinionated...I don't go chit chatting all over the net...I don't have time or interest... but when I do speak out... I mean what I say...all of what I say. And I don't back down...which really infuriates some people who prize their ability to shout anyone outta the water.

Mind if I ask you to U2U me the details of what you got hit with? Because I hit with a lot lately too. Fifteen or more, I stopped counting...

I'm sure a lot of who got viruses and who didn't depended on who had what kind of computer and how patched it was (for us XP users), but just to be safe you may want to at least run this:

Tis a wonderful, computer-saving thing.
